El cuarto jueves de noviembre - Thanksgiving Day
La típica estampa de la familia reunida alrededor de un enorme pavo y una mesa llena de apetitosas viandas ha llegado a nosotros a través de infinidad de fotografías, películas y series.
El destinatario de esos agradecimientos suele ser la figura de Dios (aunque cada vez hay más personas que no profesan religión alguna y que siguen celebrando esa jornada tan especial).
Desde 1941 se celebra cada cuarto jueves de noviembre, pero hasta entonces se había realizado desde sus inicios el último jueves en lugar del cuarto.
El motivo del cambio fue a raíz de la petición realizada por Fred Lazarus Jr. (por aquel entonces máximo responsable de los grandes almacenes Macy’s) quien convenció al mismísimo presidente Franklin Delano Roosevelt para que adelantase una semana en el calendario la celebración del Día de Acción de Gracias y así disponer de más días de venta de productos y regalos navideños, debido a que al día siguiente comienzan las rebajas (‘Black Friday’) y con ellas la campaña de Navidad.
Pero el Día de Acción de Gracias no es una celebración moderna. La mayoría de los historiadores apuntan al año 1621 y localizan a quienes iniciaron esta tradición en la Colonia de Plymouth (que hoy en día forma parte del estado de Massachusetts).
Según explican crónicas de la época, un grupo de colonos (muy posiblemente de procedencia holandesa; aunque algunos historiadores indican que eran británicos protestantes, pertenecientes al puritanismo y que habían sido expulsados de Inglaterra) llegaron hasta aquel lugar en los inicios del frío invierno de 1620.
Iban desprovistos de lo más esencial y a las pocas semanas comenzaron a escasear sus alimentos, algo que provocó que muchos de ellos enfermasen y comenzasen a fallecer.
También les enseñaron a pescar y cazar, por lo que los nuevos residentes de la Colonia de Plymouth obtuvieron unos excelentes resultados, pudiendo tener buenas siembras.
En agradecimiento a los indígenas les ofrecieron una celebración donde compartieron sus alimentos.
Ese acto es el que (según la mayoría de expertos) se señala como el inicio de la tradicional celebración del Día de Acción de Gracias.
Como es de imaginar, poco a poco fue extendiéndose la costumbre entre otros colonos, llegando a abarcar la totalidad del territorio norteamericano y convirtiéndose en algo tan popular y arraigado que, en 1863, el presidente Abraham Lincoln proclamó oficialmente el último jueves de noviembre como día de fiesta nacional, con el fin de que todas las familias pudiesen reunirse y celebrar el Día de Acción de Gracias.
Este día se ha convertido en una de las fechas más especiales y preferidas por la mayoría de familias norteamericanas.
También cabe destacar los múltiples actos que se celebran a lo largo del día en multitud de poblaciones, entre ellos el gran desfile que organiza los grandes almacenes Macy’s.
