The film received nine Oscar nominations, winning two of them: one for Best Original Screenplay, for Matt Damon and Ben Affleck, and the other for Best Supporting Actor for Robin Williams.

Synopsis

Will Hunting is a young self-taught prodigy who works in the cleaning services of a high school.

The discovery of his talent by the academics will force him to choose between continuing with his usual life, an easy job, good friends, lots of beers and a few fights, or taking advantage of his amazing intellectual qualities at a university. Only the advice of a lonely bohemian and a professor will help him decide.

Plot

Will Hunting, 21, from South Boston, has a genius-level intellect and an excellent eidetic memory; but instead of exploiting his talents, he chooses to live an easy, unencumbered life working as a janitor - perhaps a caretaker's assistant - at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, as well as spending his free time with his friends Chuckie Sullivan, Billy McBride, and Morgan O'Mally.

Fields Medal-winning combinatorialist Professor Gerald Lambeau poses a difficult problem, drawn from algebraic graph theory, as a challenge to his graduate students on the panel for his students, and the problem is solved quickly, but anonymously.

In fact, it was Will who solved it. Lambeau publishes a much more difficult problem but Will is discovered when he tries to solve it and runs away. At the same time, during a night out drinking with his friends he meets Skylar, a British student about to graduate from Harvard University and pursue a graduate degree at Stanford University School of Medicine in California.

Will is imprisoned after assaulting a man who had bullied him as a child, and beating up a policeman. Lambeau urges and helps Will to stay out of jail if he agrees to study mathematics under his supervision and see a therapist.

Will accepts the deal, but treats his therapists with derision and contempt and refuses to work with them. In desperation, Lambeau asks for help from Sean Maguire, who was Lambeau's college roommate, who also grew up in South Boston, and who now teaches psychology at Bunker Hill Community College. Unlike the other therapists, Sean manages to communicate more with Will by overcoming his defence mechanisms and, after a few unproductive sessions, Will begins to open up.

Will is particularly impressed by the story of how Sean met his wife: by giving up his ticket to Game 6 of the 1975 World Series - which turned out to be extraordinary, historic and unforgettable - after falling in love with her at first sight.

Sean does not regret his decision, nor will he regret the last years of his marriage when his wife was dying of cancer. This encourages Will to have a relationship with Skylar, even though he lies to her about his past and refuses to introduce her to his friends or show her his rundown neighbourhood. Will also challenges Sean to take an objective look at his own life, as he has been unable to get over the death of his wife.

Will begins to chafe under the high expectations Lambeau has, he mocks the job interviews Lambeau arranges for him. They have a fierce argument about his future and it upsets him. On one occasion, he even sends his friend Chuckie to impersonate him at one of these interviews.

When Skylar asks Will if he wants to move to California with her, he panics, tearfully revealing that he is an orphan and that his adoptive father physically abused him - it is unclear to what extent, but one can suspect the worst given the trauma it caused him. Skylar tells Will that she loves him, but he denies her love and leaves her.

Meanwhile, he begins to despise his work with Lambeau, dismissing the mathematical research he has been doing. Sean points out that Will is adept at anticipating future failure in his interpersonal relationships and deliberately sabotages them, in order to avoid the risk of emotional pain. When he refuses to give an honest answer about what he wants to do with his life, Sean shows him the door.

Will tells Chuckie that he wants to be a blue-collar worker for the rest of his life; Chuckie replies that it would be an insult to his friends because he would lose his potential, and that his greatest wish is for him to go out and find something bigger. Will decides to accept one of the job offers arranged by Lambeau.

In another therapy session, Sean and Will share that they were both victims of child abuse, and Sean helps Will to accept that the abuse he suffered was not his fault.

After being helped to overcome his problems, Sean reconciles with Lambeau and decides to take a year off to travel the world. When Will's friends present him with a rebuilt Chevrolet Nova for his 21st birthday, he decides to pass on their lucrative job offers and drives to California to meet Skylar.

El descubrimiento de su talento por parte de los académicos le va a obligar a elegir entre seguir con su vida de siempre, un trabajo fácil, buenos amigos,  muchas cervezas y algunas peleas o aprovechar sus asombrosas cualidades intelectuales en alguna universidad. Sólo los consejos de un solitario bohemio y un profesor le ayudarán a decidirse.

Argumento

Will Hunting, de 21 años de edad y del sur de Boston, tiene un intelecto del nivel de un genio y una excelente memoria eidética; pero en lugar de explotar su talento opta por vivir una vida fácil y sin compromisos trabajando en la limpieza —quizá como ayudante del conserje— en el Instituto de Tecnología de Massachusetts, además de pasar su tiempo libre con sus amigos Chuckie Sullivan, Billy McBride, y Morgan O'Mally.

El combinatorista ganador de la Medalla Fields, el profesor Gerald Lambeau plantea en el panel para sus alumnos un problema difícil, tomado de la teoría de grafos algebraico, como un reto a sus estudiantes graduados y el problema es resuelto rápida, pero anónimamente.

En realidad, fue Will quien lo resolvió. Lambeau publica un problema mucho más difícil pero Will es descubierto cuando intenta resolverlo y huye. Al mismo tiempo, durante una noche de copas con sus amigos conoce a Skylar, una estudiante británica a punto de graduarse en la Universidad de Harvard y obtener un título de posgrado en la Escuela de Medicina de la Universidad de Stanford, en California.

Will es encarcelado después de agredir a un hombre que lo había intimidado cuando era niño, y de golpear a un policía. Lambeau insta y ayuda a Will para no ir a la cárcel, si él está de acuerdo en estudiar matemáticas bajo su supervisión y ver a un terapeuta.

Will acepta el trato, pero trata a sus terapeutas con burla y desprecio y se niega a trabajar con ellos. En su desesperación, Lambeau le pide ayuda a Sean Maguire, que fue compañero de habitación de Lambeau en la universidad, que también se crio en el sur de Boston, y que ahora enseña psicología en Bunker Hill Community College. A diferencia de los otros terapeutas, Sean logra comunicarse más con Will superando sus mecanismos de defensa y, después de unas cuantas sesiones improductivas, Will comienza a abrirse.

Esto anima a Will a tener una relación con Skylar, a pesar de que le miente sobre su pasado y se niega a presentarla a sus amigos o mostrarle su destartalado barrio. Will también desafía a Sean a tener una mirada objetiva de su propia vida, ya que no ha podido superar la muerte de su esposa.

Will comienza a irritarse bajo las altas expectativas que tiene Lambeau, se burla de las entrevistas de trabajo que organiza Lambeau para él. Tienen una fuerte discusión sobre su futuro y eso le molesta. En una ocasión, incluso envía a su amigo Chuckie a suplantarle en una de esas entrevistas.

Cuando Skylar le pregunta a Will si quiere mudarse a California con ella, él entra en pánico, revelando entre lágrimas que es huérfano y que su padre adoptivo abusó físicamente de él -no queda muy claro hasta qué punto, pero puede sospecharse lo peor dado el trauma que le originó-. Skylar le dice a Will que ella lo ama, pero él le niega su amor y la deja.

Mientras, comienza a despreciar su trabajo con Lambeau, desechando la investigación matemática que ha estado haciendo. Sean señala que Will es adepto a anticipar el fracaso futuro en sus relaciones interpersonales y las sabotea deliberadamente, con el fin de evitar el riesgo de dolor emocional. Cuando se niega a dar una respuesta honesta sobre lo que quiere hacer con su vida, Sean le muestra la puerta.

Will dice a Chuckie que quiere ser un obrero para el resto de su vida; Chuckie responde que sería un insulto a sus amigos porque perdería su potencial, y que su mayor deseo es que salga a buscar algo más grande. Will decide aceptar una de las ofertas de trabajo organizado por Lambeau.

En otra sesión de terapia, Sean y Will comparten que ambos eran víctimas de abuso infantil, y Sean ayuda a Will para aceptar que el abuso que sufrió no fue su culpa.

Después de haber ayudado a superar sus problemas, Sean se reconcilia con Lambeau y decide tomar un año sabático para viajar por el mundo. Cuando los amigos de Will lo presentan con un Chevrolet Nova reconstruido por su 21 cumpleaños, decide pasar de sus ofertas de trabajo lucrativas y conduce a California para reunirse con Skylar.
