Mr. Ripley's Talent is a novel by Patricia Highsmith published in 1955. It is a psychological noir-thriller set mostly in Europe.
Plot
Tom Ripley is struggling to make a living in the big city, New York, despite his special talent for doing anything to survive.
Matt Damon plays a "thief of lives": a compulsive liar who pretends to be who he is because, he says, "I always thought it was better to be somebody, even if it's fake, than to be a nobody".
And to cover up the lies, he enters an escalation of doom in which each new crime tries to cover up the previous one...

What kind of chain is power that the more it girdles and tears, the more it suffocates and suffocates, the more attachment and addiction it produces?
We had just remembered, on the 50th anniversary of Watergate, the pathetic image of Nixon opening his arms in victory, after having to leave the White House after two years of torment and ignominy, and this Thursday we came across Boris Johnson at the door of Downing Street, pierced by the stab wounds of dozens of resignations, kicked and bruised, but proclaiming that he is leaving "the best job in the world"... and clinging to the office for two more months.
The common denominator in the downfall of both demagogues, clutching the sceptre and the ermine until the last moment, is the indelible stain of lies.
Neither Nixon nor Johnson stole, killed or plunged their great nations into punishable calamities.
They simply tried to cover up small scandals - the intrusion into that hotel, those forbidden 'party parties' during the pandemic - with falsehoods that, by dint of repetition, ended up becoming bigger than they were.
In Spain, it matters little if it is implausible that the head of government did not know that the current president of the Generalitat had been investigated by judicial order while he was already in the Moncloa.
Little does it matter if it seems impossible to believe that, when Sánchez described Melilla as a "well-resolved" matter, he had not seen the videos that had been circulating on the networks for hours or had not at least been informed of the circumstances of the deaths at the foot of the fence.

It is true that Sánchez's case is unique in that no one has ever 'survived' so long with so few seats and such incongruous external support. Who would have thought that we would see a government with communist ministers, agreeing with Bildu on nothing less than the Law of Democratic Memory, while he gets the praise of the European Commission, the Atlantic Council and the White House.
I have re-watched several of the films inspired by Patricia Highsmith's novels that make up the Tom Ripley saga and, if we exclude the blood, murder, violence and vileness, I must say that I have often recognised Pedro Sánchez in the protagonist.
LoI am not referring to his ethical condition - for these purposes it would not matter if he had oriented his gifts towards philanthropy - but to the splitting of his personality. (continues)

¿Qué clase de cadena es el poder que cuanto más ciñe y desgarra, cuanto más sofoca y ahoga, más apego y adicción produce?
Acabábamos de recordar, en el cincuentenario de Watergate, la patética imagen de Nixon abriendo los brazos en señal de victoria, tras tener que abandonar la Casa Blanca al cabo de dos años de tormento e ignominia, y nos topamos este jueves con Boris Johnson a la puerta de Downing Street, agujereado por las puñaladas de docenas de dimisiones, forrado a patadas y lleno de moratones, pero proclamando que abandona "el mejor trabajo del mundo"... y aferrándose dos meses más al cargo.
El denominador común de la caída de ambos demagogos, agarrados al cetro y al armiño hasta el instante postrero, es la mancha indeleble de la mentira.
Ni Nixon ni Johnson robaron, mataron o abocaron a sus grandes naciones a calamidades punibles.
Simplemente trataron de tapar pequeños escándalos -la intrusión en aquel hotel, esas ‘fiestuquis’ prohibidas durante la pandemia- con falsedades que, a fuerza de reiteradas, terminaron haciéndose más grandes que ellos.
En España poco importa si resulta inverosímil que el jefe del Gobierno no supiera que el actual presidente de la Generalitat había sido investigado por orden judicial estando ya él en la Moncloa.
Poco importa si parece imposible creer que, cuando Sánchez describió lo de Melilla como un asunto "bien resuelto", no hubiera visto los vídeos que llevaban horas circulando por las redes o no hubiera sido al menos informado de las circunstancias de las muertes al pie de la valla.

Es cierto que el caso de Sánchez tiene la singularidad de que nadie ha "sobrevivido" tanto con tan pocos escaños y apoyos externos tan incongruentes entre sí.
Quién nos iba a decir que veríamos un gobierno con ministros comunistas, pactando con Bildu nada menos que la Ley de la Memoria Democrática, mientras obtiene los parabienes de la Comisión Europea, el Consejo Atlántico y la Casa Blanca.
He vuelto a ver varias de las películas inspiradas en las novelas de Patricia Highsmith que forman la saga de Tom Ripley y, si excluimos la sangre, el asesinato, la violencia y la vileza, debo decir que he reconocido a menudo a Pedro Sánchez en el protagonista.
No me refiero a su condición ética -a estos efectos daría igual que hubiera orientado sus dones a la filantropía- sino al desdoblamiento de su personalidad. (continua)
