El wéstern es uno de los géneros más antiguos y venerados de Hollywood, y más de un siglo después sigue encontrando maneras de reinventarse, reescribirse y sorprenderse.
Es un género genuinamente cinematográfico y norteamericano, hasta que devino, con toda la razón del mundo, legendario y se instauró en el imaginario de los espectadores de todo el mundo provocando mímesis (Imitación que hace una persona de los gestos, movimientos, manera de hablar o de actuar de otra), homenajes y estimulantes perversiones.
Cine histórico, por supuesto, el wéstern habla de la conquista, auge, pacificación, choque cultural y entrada en los tiempos modernos de los Estados Unidos e incluye un buen puñado de películas históricas con hechos verídicos como el duelo en O.K. Corral y algunas de las mejores películas bélicas (la frontera de México, la guerra de independencia estadounidense o la de secesión son transfondos habituales del género), incluso hay quién ha mezclado el wéstern con las películas de ciencia ficción, pero esa es otra historia como quien dice.
Lo importante es que transfigurando la historia encontramos mitología en estado puro. Un mito -el de la frontera, el llanero solitario, el pionero... el Oeste, en fin- que ha traspasado fronteras de tiempo y genéricas para ser el modelo de otras propuestas (policiaco, acción, terror o cowboys vs aliens...).
Entre los mejores wésterns de la historia del celuloide no pueden faltar nombres como el de John Ford, que firmó algunas de las mejores películas del cine clásico y wésterns que han creado escuela como 'La diligencia' (que décadas después tendría reflejos en 'La balada de Buster Scruggs' de los hermanos Coen y 'Los odiosos ocho' de Quentin Tarantino), 'Centauros del desierto' (cuyo plano final con John Wayne en el umbral de la puerta ha originado incontables homenajes que llegan hasta la oscarizada 'Nomadland') y 'El hombre que mató a Liberty Valance' (que recogía uno de los enfrentamientos más clásicos del género: entre la masculinidad férrea de la pistola en mano y la defensa de la ley y la justicia).
Junto a Ford hay otros nombres clásicos de Hollywood como William Wyler, Raoul Walsh o Howard Hughes, pero el wéstern realmente alcanzaría una estética inconfundible en manos de un italiano: Sergio Leone.
De él encontraremos en esta lista dos de sus películas más legendarias e influyentes 'El bueno, el feo y el malo' y 'Hasta que llegó su hora'.
Y de ahí hasta la actualidad, donde algunas de las mejores películas indies se han lanzado al Oeste como 'El asesinato de Jesse James por el cobarde John Ford' de Andrew Dominik o 'Meek's Cutoff' de Kelly Reichardt, siguiendo la tradición dentro de su propio estilo.

The Western is one of Hollywood's oldest and most revered genres, and more than a century later it continues to find ways to reinvent, rewrite and surprise.
It is a genuinely cinematic and American genre, until it became, quite rightly, legendary and established itself in the imagination of viewers all over the world, provoking mimesis, homages and stimulating perversions.
Historical cinema, of course, the wéstern is about the conquest, rise, pacification, cultural clash and entry into modern times of the United States and includes a good handful of historical films with true events such as the duel at the O.K. Corral and some of the best war films (the Mexican frontier, the American War of Independence or the War of Secession are common backgrounds of the genre), some have even mixed the wéstern with science fiction films, but that is another story as it were.
The important thing is that by transfiguring history we find mythology in its purest form. A myth - that of the frontier, the lone ranger, the pioneer... the West, in short - that has crossed time and generic frontiers to become the model for other proposals (crime, action, horror or cowboys vs. aliens...).
Among the best wésterns in the history of celluloid we can't forget names like John Ford, who made some of the best films in classic cinema and wésterns that have created a school such as 'Stagecoach' (which decades later would be reflected in 'The Ballad of Buster Scruggs' by the Coen brothers and 'The Hateful Eight' by Quentin Tarantino), Centaurs of the Desert' (whose final shot with John Wayne in the doorway has given rise to countless homages that reach as far as the Oscar-winning 'Nomadland') and 'The Man Who Killed Liberty Valance' (which included one of the most classic confrontations of the genre: Between the iron masculinity of the gun in hand and the defence of law and justice).
Alongside Ford there are other classic Hollywood names such as William Wyler, Raoul Walsh and Howard Hughes, but the wéstern would really achieve an unmistakable aesthetic in the hands of an Italian: Sergio Leone.
This list includes two of his most legendary and influential films, 'The Good, the Bad and the Ugly' and 'Till His Time'.
And from there to the present day, where some of the best indie films have gone Western, such as Andrew Dominik's 'The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward John Ford' or Kelly Reichardt's 'Meek's Cutoff', following the tradition within their own style.
